Lenovo IdeaPad Z580
In this review, we focus on the Lenovo IdeaPad Z580 and evaluate whether it ranks among the best laptops for college. While Lenovo is a favorite in the workplace, it is now producing some more affordable notebook computers geared towards budget-conscious students and anyone who’s looking for a good value for money computer that’s reliable. The Lenovo IdeaPad Z580 is perfect for individuals seeking a sturdy, affordable and high-performance laptop. With a 15.6” display, a resolution of 1366 x 768 and impressive HD graphics, the Z580 will always provide the user with an exciting visual experience. This has become more important over the past few years because the video is becoming a more significant part of everyday online and offline activity. Top notch, realistic graphics are a massive plus for users who plan on gaming or watching videos. It doesn’t come with a dedicated video card, so it may not be the best option for college students or users who want to run top of the line 3D games during their spare time. However, it does well with the moderately demanding sports, so you’re not left out. While many HD screens pose the problem of screen reflectiveness and poor viewing at an angle, the quality Lenovo Z580 screen has a low level of reflectiveness and functions well in poor conditions with its anti-glare display. Lenovo IdeaPad Its Intel Core i5-3230M processor allows for the user to perform multiple tasks simultaneously without any lag. The user can play an interactive game in one window, surf the web in another and watch a video in this laptop’s DVD burner without the interruption and annoyance of slow-loading times. Another small but positive feature of the Lenovo Z580 is its comfortable AccuType keyboard, which includes touch-sensitive hotkeys. Pros:
  • 15.6” display, resolution 1366 x 768 and HD graphics provide for excellent visual experience
  • Low screen reflectiveness
  • Affordability
  • Aesthetically pleasing
  • Sturdy build
  • Significant amount of storage space (1000 GB Hard Drive)
  • Good multi-tasking capability- does not lag even when multiple applications are running
  • Comfortable, well laid out keyboard
Cons:
  • Weak battery
  • Low Maximum Sound Volume
Whether doing your research paper or completing your summer job internship at your dream company, you’ll be happy to know that typing on this chiclet-style keyboard is comfortable and the keys are firm. This is a common concern of people who need to type a lot of writers, students, and bloggers. It also comes with a number keypad which makes it faster to do those Accounting class homework or financial statement modeling.   One drawback of the keys is they aren’t backlit, so you don’t get the benefit of seeing them in the dark unless you have a desk lamp. No concern is needed as far as damaging this laptop. Its sturdy exterior is built to prevent dents, bends, scratches and even fingerprint smudges. For users with a past of damaging their devices, the Lenovo Z580 is their solution. Although the Z580 is sturdy, it possesses a compact, sleek and aesthetically pleasing appearance (colors to choose from are bright white, red or brushed metal). The Lenovo Z580 also has the benefit of a 6 GB DDR3 Memory and 1 TB 5400RPM Hard Drive, storage space which is among the highest of laptops currently available in the market. The RAM assists the already powerful CPU so you won’t have issues in not being able to load or run any of the required applications. Overall speed is breakneck. The massive one terabyte hard drive, on the other hand, is a music and file downloader’s dream. Save all the video, apps and movies you want, and install games and software as needed, you’ll probably still have some space left over. This attribute makes this laptop ideal for professional use in a workplace or classroom setting. Transferring data is made simple through the Lenovo Z580’s two high-speed USB 3.0 ports, and another two more of the standard USB 2.0 version. Laptop IdeaPad One of the few disadvantages is a weak battery, which will “die” if the computer is running unplugged for more than four or so hours. And, if the user is performing a function such as playing an elaborate video game, will give out after two hours. This negative aspect may inconvenience users who are on-the-go and not next to a power outlet. While the Dolby Home Theater sound settings do not exhibit any sound distortion, the maximum volume is relatively low when compared to other laptops in today’s market. This problem can easily be solved with a pair of high-quality headphones; the Turtle Beach Ear Force Z11 headphones are a significant affordable investment for sound enhancement. If you’re worried about after sales services, there are warranty upgrades, warranty extensions and accidental damage protection are available with the purchase of the Lenovo IdeaPad Z580. For those looking for an affordable notebook computer for school, the IdeaPad Z580, with its features and performance make it to our list of best laptops for college students.

Laptop Brands
Purchasing a laptop can be an expensive decision; the various brands and features offered by different laptops make this decision even more difficult, making it integral to have adequate knowledge of the multiple brands of laptops. The various laptop brands available each cater to different types of laptop users, with some focusing on innovation and design and others on affordability. The following article will review the best and worst aspects of the various laptop brands available on the market, ultimately making it easier for you to decide which brand of laptop to purchase. Before you go throughout the brand list, it is essential to get an idea of what you want and need out of your laptop.
  • Do you need a high-quality resolution and display for watching movies and playing games?
  • Do you need a decent sound system for music and movies?
  • Do you emphasize sleek design?
  • Or do you just need a decent, affordable laptop for writing, email and work activities?
Although the feature labels on a laptop come with all sorts of details on what each unit comes with – there are three main concerns you should be using as comparison benchmarks. Best laptop brand
  1. Processing Speed:  This is the rating on how fast the computer can process information and isn’t as crucial for people that just use their laptops for reading emails or surfing one website at a time – but if you are a multi-tasker or are into playing games or even running large programs – a laptop with a faster processing unit in it is a must.
  2. Memory:  Many people get confused when they think about the ” memory ”  of a computer with the ” Hard Drive .“    The hard drive is actually where all the data is stored such as your movies and picture files – the memory ( or RAM ) is your computer’s measurement on how much memory has to run a program as individual files have to be loaded for each application.  A person who has a lot of windows open and a lot of programs running will need a system with a higher memory quotient.
  3. Hard Drive:  The Hard Drive is the filing cabinet of your laptop and the bigger the hard drive – the more data that can be stored.  Hard Drives are measured in GB ( Gigabytes ) and the more, the better if you plan on saving a lot of movies or videos.   The top end laptops go up to terabytes in hard drive capacity.
Answering these questions will help you eliminate specific brands and focus on the ones that meet your standards. For example, if you do not place value on design and high-quality resolution, you may want to consider purchasing a cheap Acer or HP product and stay away from the higher priced Apple products.   Alternatively, if you want an excellent quality resolution and sleek design, you may want to spend the extra money on an Apple or Lenovo product. However, ultimately Acer provides a wide range of laptops for both low and expensive prices, making them an excellent choice for all types of laptop users. Apple See the Entire Selection of Current Apple Laptops Here From portable iPads to laptops, Apple has been dominating much of the electronics industry in the recent years. Ultimately, Apple laptops offer the most consistent, quality products on the laptop market. Although they do not provide many budget-priced opportunities, for those willing to spend the money, they have plenty to offer. ASUS See the Entire Selection of Current Asus Laptops Here Although the ASUS brand started off near the bottom of the laptop heap, in recent years their multiple improvements have made them a great, reliable laptop brand. Their sleek, brushed metal designs and the inclusion of a screen on the lid of their Taichi 21 make them an excellent choice for those who like innovation in the design category. Their keyboards also provide comfy, bouncy keys with great feedback, as well as a lack of flex. Furthermore, their displays are fantastic, giving high-quality resolutions and excellent viewing angles and their sound systems provide a precise listening experience even at the highest volumes. The significant features listed above in combination with a great selection of cheaper priced options make ASUS an excellent choice for any laptop user. Dell See the Entire Selection of Current Asus Laptops Here Despite the fact that Dell has struggled to keep up with the more innovate Apple and Lenovo brands, their laptops still provide reliable, consistent quality. Although their designs can be on the bulky side, they make up for this with keyboards that consistently offer comfy spacing and response combined with great backlighting. Additionally, their displays provide high performance, and their Alienware models have excellent audio and video hardware. Ultimately, Dell laptops offer consistent quality at reasonable prices for those who cannot afford to invest in the higher priced laptops such as Apple. HP See the Entire Selection of Current HP Laptops Here HP notebooks are currently the best-selling in the world, inching out the Lenovo brand mentioned below. HP laptops provide great designs, with some featuring glass on their lids and others featuring a brushed aluminum chassis. The keyboards are not as comfortable as Lenovo or Apple laptops, although they offer attractive keyboard layouts and adequate backlighting. Furthermore, their responsiveness is very high, making them very easy to use with little problems. They also provide screens with plenty of color and detail, and the inclusion of Beats Audio with their products ensures that you will always get excellent audio quality. Although HP laptops are not as innovative as Apple or Lenovo, their products possess great value and plenty of price ranges for notebooks users of all budget types. Their sleek, carbon fiber designs and bright colors make these excellent choices for those who want the quality of an Apple laptop with a bit more style and flair. Their keyboards are very high-quality, offering plenty of space and resistance to water and spill damage. Additionally, some of their products provide a Windows 8 convertible with three user modes, which is unprecedented. The only downside to Lenovo laptops stems from their IdeaPad line, which sometimes has small keys and cramped keyboards. Despite this flaw, Lenovo is one of the top laptop brands right up there with Apple, providing consistent, high-end laptops that are guaranteed to please. Samsung See the Entire Selection of Current Samsung Laptops Here Samsung has long been a staple of electronic products ranging from TVs to computers, and have always been known for their quality. Their laptops are no different, sporting lightweight designs and high-end hardware, especially in their Chromebook line. However, where Samsung laptops shine is in their displays and sound systems, which offer beautiful visuals and great audio, especially on the higher-end products. The only downside to Samsung laptops is their keyboards, which range in quality. Although some offer comfortable typing experiences, some lack multitouch features, others have thick palm rests, and many provide no backlighting. Despite these downsides, Samsung laptops provide excellent quality as well as a few budget-priced options. Sony See the Entire Selection of Current Sony Laptops Here Another long-time staple of the electronics market is Sony, who continue to provide high-quality laptops for their customers. Their great use of color and products that utilize a thin chassis make their laptops very aesthetically appealing. For example, the VAIO Series 13 line of Sony laptops come in five different colors, making them excellent choices for those who place a lot of value on the appearance of their computer. Additionally, the display and audio of their products are typically high, offering 1080p displays with wide viewing angles and quality sound systems. However, one downside of Sony laptops is the fact that some of their products contain backlight leakage, decreasing their effectiveness. Ultimately, Sony provides quality laptops with a wide variety of price ranges and features for many types of laptop users. Toshiba See the Entire Selection of Current Toshiba Laptops Here The once famous Toshiba brand has fallen below the higher quality of its competitors, although they still offer a vast range of value-priced products with an adequate level of quality. Many of their products feature bright displays with a wide range of vibrant colors, as well as robust sound quality. However, their keyboards possess slippery keys, and their designs are far from Innovate. At the end of the day, although Toshiba laptops provide great options for those looking for an affordable laptop option, they are not suited for laptop fanatics looking for the highest levels of quality and innovation. Laptop brand quality Top 3 Laptop Brands The Bottom Line Apple, Lenovo, and ASUS are the current brands dominating the laptop market, offering high levels of quality and innovation currently unmatched by their competitors. Apple MacBook Air Review

MacBook Air

The gym bunny slimmed down version of the MacBook Pro

With two screen-size (11” and 13”) versions of the Apple MacBook Air, we managed to get our hands on the 13-inch version to put it through its paces.  One of the major plus points of the 13 inch Air is the extra 3 hours of battery life Apple claim to have over its smaller counterpart. So the first thing we did was to charge and discharge the machine entirely. For the best part of a day, the battery performed amazingly well as we streamed HD videos and played music through the notebook’s speakers at high volumes. Impressively, the battery did last the day and clocked up 10 hours before we plugged back in. Even more impressive is the MacBook Air’s ability to retain battery charge for up to 30 days while left on standby! On performance, Apple has deployed the latest magic from Intel to deliver processing speed and graphics capable of dealing with any task we threw at it. For the techies reading this, that’s 4th generation Intel Core Processors and Intel HD Graphics 5000 card. The MacBook Air is, of course, a beautiful looking, elegantly shaped and sleek notebook. Its size and weight are conducive to taking it with you wherever you go. Taking it away from our 802.11ac Base Station was difficult considering the machine’s next-generation wireless technology made web surfing seem infinitely faster than on previous Mac’s we’ve worked with. But take it to cafes, and on trains, we did, and there again the battery life impressed us massively, as did the machine’s ability to wake up thanks to its flash storage and processor. MacBook Air

Key Features:

  • 128 GB HDD (upgradable to 512 GB)
  • Intel Dual Core i5 1.3 GHz Processor
  • Thunderbolt and two USB 3 connections
  • Up to 12 hours Battery Life
  • Ultra-thin design set the trend for market competitors
  • Preinstalled with powerful programs like GarageBand, iPhoto, and iMovie

Who was the MacBook Air designed for?

Have we mentioned the fantastic battery life of the Air? The beauty of the MacBook Air is that you can be so productive for so long and stay away from the mains power supply. People in the creative industries, students, and business people will all benefit from the machine’s impressive performance to battery life ratio. Having got to grips with the Air over just a few days and played around with the myriad of Apps, we can safely say that this machine is designed for anyone who desires a lightweight, sturdy and portable notebook.

Pros and Cons

Pros:
  • Lightweight
  • Market leading Battery Life
  • Faster and more responsive than other notebooks in the same class
  • OS X Mavericks Operating System
Cons:
  • No HDMI output
  • Limited Hard Drive Space
While the lack of an HDMI output may seem like a hindrance, MacBook Air’s claim to fame isn’t media heavy. Yes, this computer is sturdy and can be great for editing music and videos, however, if your primary concern is watching movies, there are much more suitable options with larger screens and easier on your wallet. Check them out here. Of course, if you are hell bent on transferring your screen to a full-sized television, you can always achieve this through an HDMI converter which connects to your thunderbolt. The secondary qualm of the MacBook Air is the fact that it’s solid state drive doesn’t contain a lot of storage space, only 128gigs. However, this can be remedied with an external hard drive, and upgrade to 512 gigs, or cloud storage for those files you can’t live without! Apple MacBook
